Stream Farming in Nigeria’s Music Industry: A Growing Concern

Streaming farms refer to the use of automated bots to artificially inflate song stream counts on platforms like Spotify. This practice, also known as bot streaming, involves bots streaming songs repeatedly, often using multiple devices connected to a central operating system.

In March 2025, Rapper Odumodublvck highlighted the widespread practice of stream farming in Nigeria’s music industry. He noted that artificially inflating streaming numbers doesn’t necessarily translate to real-world success, such as concert bookings or ticket sales. Odumodublvck expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “Farming is crazy cause it’s not translating into shows. It’s not translating into bookings and ticket sales home and abroad. So, what’s the point?”

Artists like Yemi Alade and Blaqbonez have also voiced similar concerns, particularly pointing out manipulations on platforms like Apple Music Nigeria charts. However, music executive Don Jazzy has dismissed the existence of such practices, asserting in a 2023 interview that streaming farms don’t exist.

Streaming platforms are becoming more sophisticated in detecting and penalizing artificial streaming activity. Since February 2025, Spotify has been actively addressing artificial streaming by deducting fraudulent streams from various artists’ tracks, including those of Nigerian stars. These deductions aim to ensure that streaming numbers accurately reflect genuine listener engagement.

Spotify’s policy is clear: using third-party services that guarantee streams in exchange for payment violates their terms and conditions. Consequences for such violations can include withholding royalties, correcting public streaming numbers, and even removing manipulated content from the platform.

The implications of stream farming are significant, creating an uneven playing field that disadvantages genuine artists who rely on organic growth. As the Nigerian music industry continues to evolve, addressing the challenges posed by stream farming is crucial to ensure fairness and maintain the integrity of the music ecosystem.
